Trailbuilding Workbee at Whaleback Natural Area

Thursday, July 18th | 9:00am

Join us at Whaleback Natural Area to help maintain key trail features that preserve the sustainability and integrity of this popular Leland hiking destination. We installed water bars last year to prevent erosion on the steep hill trail leading to the lookout platform over Lake Michigan. These water bars have successfully provided the trail relief from snow melt and rainfall as it travels downhill. However, leaf litter and debris fill some of the paths and require maintenance to keep the water moving away from the trail. Tasks will be moderately strenuous and include clearing debris from water bars, repairing wooden supports, leveling the trail and lopping brush. Please come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear for warm weather outdoor work among vegetation and on uneven terrain. We will meet in the Whaleback parking lot along M-22 just south of Leland and the workbee will last about 2 hours.
